The Mother's Day Guide to Carmel

The Mother's Day Guide to Carmel

Where to Celebrate Mother’s Day in Carmel, Carmel Valley & Big Sur

There’s a particular quality to a Carmel morning in May. The marine layer breaks up just past the cypresses, light pours over the white sand, and the village settles into a quiet rhythm of slow walks and longer breakfasts. It’s the kind of day that asks to be lingered in—and the kind of place worth bringing Mom to.

From a vineyard-side brunch in the Valley, to a cliffside table in Carmel Highlands, to an unhurried walk along Carmel Beach, the Monterey Peninsula’s southern stretch offers a gentler, more curated kind of Mother’s Day. Below, our annually updated guide to the most considered places to dine, drink, and slow down—in Carmel-by-the-Sea, Carmel Valley, Carmel Highlands, and Big Sur.

Mother’s Day Brunch in Carmel-by-the-Sea

Mission Ranch — Carmel

It would be wrong to write a Carmel Mother’s Day guide without mentioning Mission Ranch. Clint Eastwood’s lovingly restored historic ranch sits on 22 acres above Carmel River Beach, with sheep grazing in the meadow and Point Lobos in the distance—arguably the most photographed Mother’s Day view in the region. Their special buffet brunch sells out within hours of opening reservations each spring, so for the planners reading this far in advance, mark your calendar for early April next year. This year’s reservations sold out within hours of opening, but a limited number of patio walk-in tables may be available, weather permitting.

Hours: 10am–2pm. Reservations: 831-625-9040.

Anton & Michel

For Mother’s Day diners who’d rather skip the buffet line in favor of a quieter, white-tablecloth meal, Anton & Michel remains a Carmel institution. Tucked into the Court of the Fountains on Mission Street, the room overlooks a Versailles-style courtyard and trades buffet bustle for tableside flambé desserts and a deep wine list. Open for their regular lunch and dinner service Mother’s Day Sunday—a strong choice for a more intimate celebration.

Hours: Lunch 11:30am–4pm; dinner 5pm–9pm. Reservations: 831-624-2406 or via OpenTable.

Other Carmel Village Options

For a more casual brunch in the village, Carmel-by-the-Sea has a deep bench of breakfast and brunch spots: Stationaery for a chic European-feeling room and a memorable potato pancake; and From Scratch for an unfussy, locally loved morning meal. None run formal Mother’s Day prix fixe menus, but all are excellent choices if you’d rather stay in the village and walk to the beach afterward.

Carmel Highlands & the Cliffside Option

Pacific’s Edge at Hyatt Carmel Highlands

If the goal is to take Mom somewhere she’ll talk about for the rest of the year, Pacific’s Edge is the strongest choice on this list for sheer drama. Perched on the bluffs of Carmel Highlands with floor-to-ceiling windows over the Pacific, the restaurant’s Mother’s Day brunch is a chef-attended buffet showcasing elevated brunch favorites: a build-your-own omelette bar, carved New York striploin with balsamic red wine reduction, and salmon en croute with pink brandy sauce. The seafood display alone—king crab legs, poached prawns, smoked salmon, seared ahi tuna—justifies the drive. Brunch specialties include chicken & waffles with hot honey, avocado toast, spinach artichoke ravioli, seafood paella, and frittata, with a finale of petit fours, macarons, and mini pastries.

Hours: 10am–3pm. Reservations: via OpenTable or 831-622-5445.

Mother’s Day in Carmel Valley

Bernardus Lodge & Spa — Lucia Restaurant & Bar

Twenty minutes inland from the village, Bernardus Lodge offers what may be the most polished Mother’s Day experience in the Valley. The grand buffet at Lucia Restaurant features local organic vegetables, naturally raised meats, a seafood bar, classic cheeses, and a generous dessert spread. The thoughtful flourish: complimentary family photography in the gardens, set against the property’s vineyard backdrop—a lovely keepsake without the awkwardness of asking a stranger to take the photo. For those turning the day into a longer escape, The Spa at Bernardus offers garden-inspired treatments, including an apricot silk and lavender massage and a natural glow facial.

Hours: 9am–2pm. Reservations: through Bernardus Lodge directly.

Carmel Valley Ranch

For families bringing kids—or grandkids—Carmel Valley Ranch is purpose-built for the day. The Mother’s Day brunch buffet features fresh oysters and shrimp, made-to-order omelets, prime rib carving stations, and a serious dessert section, with live entertainment and kids’ activities to keep little ones occupied. The Ranch also runs a Bee-Beautiful Mother’s Day Workshop in parallel ($95 per participant), where Mom can craft honey- and rose-inspired skincare—a lip scrub and balm, a brightening mask, and a facial mist. A nice add-on for moms who’d rather make than receive a gift.

Brunch: 11am–3pm. Pricing: Adults $145++, Children (6–12) $40++, Kids 5 and under free. Workshop: 11am, $95 per participant.

Mother’s Day in Big Sur

Big Sur River Inn

For something more rustic and considerably more scenic, the drive south on Highway 1 to Big Sur is itself part of the gift. The Big Sur River Inn, established in 1934 and tucked among the redwoods along the Big Sur River, traditionally hosts a relaxed Mother’s Day brunch with classic eggs Benedict, chilaquiles (rojo or verde), house-made pastries, and seasonal specials from Chef Adan. Live music typically kicks off at noon, and after the meal you can settle into one of the Adirondack chairs placed in the river itself. Worth confirming this year’s details by phone, but a memorable choice for moms who prefer redwoods to white tablecloths.

Reservations: 831-667-2700.

Sierra Mar at Post Ranch Inn & Sur House at Alila Ventana

For a true Big Sur splurge, both Sierra Mar at Post Ranch Inn and Sur House at Alila Ventana are open to non-guests by reservation, and both deliver sweeping ocean views and refined, locally sourced menus. Sierra Mar offers a prix fixe lunch that’s often the easier reservation; Sur House serves a daily brunch with dishes like Moroccan shakshuka and ricotta zeppole. Either makes for a once-a-year occasion. Reservations should be made well in advance.

Things to Do With Mom in Carmel

If a long brunch isn’t the right fit—or you’d like to pair the meal with something quieter—Carmel and the surrounding coast offer plenty of ways to fill the day.

A Walk Along Carmel Beach

The white sand of Carmel Beach is one of the most photogenic stretches of coastline in California, and a slow walk down Ocean Avenue to the water remains the most quintessentially Carmel thing you can do. Dogs are welcome off-leash. Mornings are typically quieter; afternoons bring the sun out from behind the marine layer. Free, beautiful, and the perfect bookend to brunch.

Wine Tasting in Carmel-by-the-Sea & Carmel Valley

Carmel has become one of California’s most underrated wine destinations. Within Carmel-by-the-Sea’s village, more than a dozen tasting rooms sit within easy walking distance of one another—a self-guided tour that requires no driver. For a more immersive experience, the Carmel Valley wine corridor is twenty minutes inland and home to highly regarded producers in a setting of rolling hills and vineyards. Either makes for a graceful, low-key Mother’s Day afternoon.

Spa Day in Carmel or Carmel Valley

The full-resort spa experiences at Bernardus Lodge, Carmel Valley Ranch, and Hyatt Carmel Highlands are worth the day on their own, but Carmel-by-the-Sea also has excellent standalone day spas if you’d rather pair a treatment with shopping or a walk. Many spas offer Mother’s Day packages or gift certificates for those giving the experience as a gift.

Point Lobos State Reserve

Just south of Carmel-by-the-Sea, Point Lobos is one of the most striking stretches of California coast—dramatic granite headlands, hidden coves, sea otters in the kelp, and easy, well-marked trails. The Cypress Grove Trail is short, mostly flat, and ends at one of the few remaining stands of native Monterey cypress in the world. A perfect post-brunch outing.

Carmel Mission Basilica

The Carmel Mission, founded in 1771, remains one of the most beautiful and contemplative spots on the Peninsula—a peaceful courtyard, a working basilica, a small museum, and gardens that come alive in spring. Quiet, free to walk the grounds, and especially meaningful for moms who appreciate history or architecture.

17-Mile Drive & Pebble Beach

A short drive from Carmel, the 17-Mile Drive winds through Pebble Beach past the Lone Cypress, Bird Rock, and Spanish Bay—some of the most photographed coastline in the country. Build in time for a stop at The Lodge at Pebble Beach for an unhurried glass of wine on the patio overlooking the 18th green.

Drive South to Big Sur

For mothers who’d rather see scenery than sit in a restaurant, the drive south on Highway 1 from Carmel to Big Sur is one of the most beautiful stretches of road in the world. Bixby Bridge, Hurricane Point, Pfeiffer Beach, and the McWay Falls overlook are all within an hour’s drive of Carmel-by-the-Sea. Pack a picnic from a Carmel deli and turn the day into an unhurried scenic drive.

Plan Mom’s Perfect Carmel Mother’s Day

The most memorable Mother’s Day plans tend to combine one anchor experience—a thoughtful brunch, a spa appointment, a tasting—with one quiet, free thing. Brunch at Bernardus paired with a drive through the Valley. Pacific’s Edge followed by an afternoon at Point Lobos. A village stroll after coffee at a Carmel cafe. The Peninsula rewards a slower pace, and Mother’s Day is the day to lean into it.

Reservations at the venues above fill quickly—often weeks before Mother’s Day Sunday—so the earlier you book, the better. For more ideas, browse our guides to things to do in Carmel, our restaurant directory, and our curated lodging recommendations.
