Faces From Carmel

Doris Day

Actress, Singer, Animal Welfare Advocate, Former Carmel Resident

The late Doris Day, known worldwide for her timeless performances in films like Pillow Talk and hit songs such as Que Sera, Sera, was not only a beloved screen icon—but also one of Carmel’s most cherished residents.

After stepping back from Hollywood, Day made Carmel her home, where she became an outspoken advocate for animal rights and rescue efforts. She co-founded the Doris Day Animal Foundation, which continues her legacy by supporting animal welfare programs across the country.

Day was also the longtime co-owner of the Cypress Inn, a landmark pet-friendly hotel in downtown Carmel that reflects her passion for hospitality and animal advocacy. Her presence in Carmel wasn’t just felt in passing; she was a true neighbor and friend to the community.

Doris Day passed away in 2019, but her compassionate spirit and joyful legacy live on throughout Carmel.
